WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA)-- During the last week in June, Chris Jollay slept, ate and panhandled on the streets of the District. The 36-year-old Alexandria, Va. government contractor says he did it for a bet.

The Bet

Jollay is a longtime Milwaukee Brewers fan. His college friend David Christman cheers for the Philadelphia Phillies. The two George Mason alumni bet in 2007 on which team would have a better season.

"We do a bet every year," Jollay tells WUSA9.com.

Jollay says winning money wasn't fun anymore. So, the friends agreed upon a different reward.

If Jollay won, then the single man would get to live the domestic life. Jollay was the best man at Christman's wedding.

"I would have gotten to move in with [Christman's] wife. She'd have to cook me dinner and I'd go to her slumber parties and [Christman would] move into my place," Jollay says.

If Jollay lost, then he'd have to go homeless in the District for one week. Jollay did lose. In 2007 the Phillies record (89 - 73) outshone the Brewer's record (83 - 79).

The question remained if Jollay would follow through. For one reason, Jollay was transitioning between jobs. Ironically, he needed to take care of his livelihood before going homeless.

Jollay says he keeps bets. "Well I had to. You have to honor a bet. I'm big into that. If you give your word to something, you should do it."

This June Jollay finally had enough vacation time to fulfill the bet. "I did tell some people at my job what I was doing for vacation. They thought kinda I was nuts," he says.

Going Homeless

Around 2 a.m. Sunday, June 29, 2008, friends dropped Jollay off on Foxhall Road in northwest DC. He wore a white t-shirt and shorts, sneakers and reading glasses.

He says he felt too conspicuous when he was trying to sleep. "I was nervous the whole time," Jollay tells WUSA9.com.

He talked to some homeless but kept mostly to himself. He didn't have much exposure to homeless people before taking on the bet. "I've given to charities but I've never really [come into much contact.]"

"One of the mistakes I made was...I wore light clothing...I would be [sleeping on a] bench and the [homeless] guy was next to me...and I didn't see him," he says. He says he was also cold at night wearing only shorts.

According to the bet, Jollay was allowed to carry one bag of items. Christman approved all of the items. Jollay says, he carried 12 power bars and 100-calorie snacks, a disposable camera, $20 dollars, contact lens, a marker and pen, and a bottle of Jack Daniels.

"I brought a big bottle of that, just to pass the time. Especially when it was cold...made the nights go faster."

He also added a change of underwear and white t-shirt, sunscreen, bug spray and pepper spray. For sleeping, he carried a woven blanket and couch pillow.

"A lot of people thought I was a weirdo with the Pokemon backpack and pillow and blanket," Jollay says.

Instead of a trash bag, he carried his 8-year-old Pokemon backpack. He tells WUSA9.com he's a fan of the Pokemon. But more importantly, he had to carry two Arabic language textbooks.

Jollay took a break from work, but he continued to attend an Arabic language class in Dupont Circle. He says he signed up for the class as part of his career development. From Monday to Thursday, he went to the three-hour language class.

To keep in touch Christman bought Jollay a pre-paid cell phone with 100 minutes. Jollay only used his cell phone to call Christman daily. Mutual friend Steve Heckman would post Jolly's updates on a website.

"There [was] certainly, the daily concern," Christman says. Christman visited Jollay frequently and brought with him water, food, and cigars.

"On Monday, I went to Boston Market and [bought] him a chicken sandwich, mashed potatoes and drink." Christman says.

Jollay ventured around Capitol Hill, Georgetown, Dupont Circle and Woodley Park. He says sometimes men did harass him.

"Sexual harassment is alive in colleges and also in the streets," says Michael Stoops, Acting Executive Director of the National Coalition for the Homeless.

Stoops learned of Jollay's experience and says it was an accurate experience.

"I think he did it in an ethical, challenging way," Stoops says.

"I was kinda nervous that something would happen to me. I didn't sleep where I wasn't secure. I went off the beaten path where no one would bother me." Jollay says.

He lost his reading glasses Monday when he left them unattended.

He says it was the hardest to find a place to sleep. "That was the worst part, trying to decide that. It varied every night." When he did sleep, he would be frequently disturbed by noise from people or birds. On average, he got 3 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

He says on Friday three drunken young men ran around his sleeping body near George Washington University.

"I jumped up. They scared the life out of me." Jollay says he almost used his pepper spray.

His sleeping areas included the National Mall, a field at The Lab School of Washington in Northwest Washington and a swing set in Northeast Washington.

"I got a little bit of flack because I hung out at the playground. It seemed like I was a weirdo pedophile, the way I looked," he says.

On other nights, he slept on a concrete bench near the Memorial Bridge and benches by the Kennedy Center and the Ellipse. He says he wanted to stretch out his 6'4 body but short benches posed a problem.

His roughest nights were when it rained: "Its sucks when things are still wet, my blanket gets damp and then I [start] to get cold," he says on friend Steve Heckman's website.

Thursday the two friends Christman and Heckman visited Jollay sleeping near the Theodore Roosevelt Building.

"I couldn't believe it. He was fatigued. His spirits were pretty low I thought," Heckman says. I thought I'd expect the Jollay I'd always knew...kinda upbeat, not serious."

Jollay was also surprised at how desperately he wanted to quit. "All Thursday and Friday, I was tired and I was just kinda dehydrated. I just missed the comforts of home."

During the day, he says he walked. "I lost 10 pounds. I was kinda surprised. Because I'm kind of a skinny guy...I walked so much, like just miles and miles."

He visited the Natural History Museum and the National Zoo. At the zoo, he ate lettuce and carrots left unattended by the zookeeper inside the monkey house.

"It was just left out in front of the door."

He says he got $12 from panhandling. He made a sign stating: "temporarily homeless but not too bright, please help."

"I was kinda careful to stay away from someone who was panhandling more than me?When people asked [why I was homeless,] I said I'd been kicked out by my girlfriend. I didn't want to patronize anybody or offend."

He did purchase a Potbelly's sandwich and $1 chicken sandwiches from McDonald's when he wasn't panhandling.

"I got hungry and weaker toward the end of the week."

Public city water fountains and sprinklers provided some hydration. And he'd used public restrooms in McDonald's, Burger King, and Starbucks.

Leaving Homelessness

His experience ended the night of July 5, 2008. He immediately attended a party with 30+ friends at Capitol Lounge near Capitol Hill. He drank his first beer under air conditioning.

He showered immediately . He slept six hours before going to his part-time job at Dulles.

Jollay says he lost weight and got a taste of the hardships facing homeless people. The 198-pound man says it was worth his vacation time.

"I could have spent it on the beach but I've done it many times...Most people haven't done this," Jollay says.

He noticed people still treated him fairly well because despite his unkempt appearance, he didn't look like a complete homeless.

"Even though I did it, I still didn't feel like it was really, really homeless. I can only imagine what I was like if I didn't have that 20 dollars and [help from my friends.]"

J wrote this recap of the week's events:
______________________________________

Well, it has been a few days since I've regained my home-living status. Just wanted to thank everyone who came out Saturday night to welcome me back into society. I really don't think I've ever tasted a better beer than the first one I tasted that night. It was great to talk to everybody--especially after a week of talking to mainly myself, inanimate objects, and other homeless guys.

To give a general idea--it wasn't that bad--kind of like a camping trip with one very important difference, I had no idea where I would sleep every night, and when I was there, I rarely if ever slept soundly for fear of something happening to me. Usually I was able to sleep some during the day, but it never really made up for the uneven lack of secure sleep at night. My stomping grounds covered about half the city--it ranged from roughly the Capitol to west of Georgetown toward the borders with MD/Virginia, and up north toward American U. and points north of the zoo on Connecticut. Sadly I never made it to such places as Anacostia or NE near RFK. Oh well, perhaps next time.

A couple of things--every time it rained it sucked. Second, I shouldn't have brought white T-shirts and a blanket with white in it; often times I didn't want people to know I was crashing somewhere, and I was way too visible. And although the Pokemon backpack was funny; it really made me look like a possible perv when I was hanging around playgrounds--and it made alot of the people in places such as Dupont think I was perhaps a desperate individual with the mind of a child, which made me a popular target indeed. Had some interesting moments in this regard.

I can't write forever--but a quick day by day recap:

Sunday night: Dave dropped me off where I requested, in the rich neighborhoods west in Georgetown off Foxhall road. Slept in a field at the Hope School for about four hours before birds woke me up. When it got light I saw a swingset in a park--thought I might come back and utilize it later.

Monday: Slept on the mall for a couple hours after a good walk from past Georgetown in between the Capitol and the monument. Went to the natural history museum when I got up. Then slowly made my way to near Dupont for my daily Arabic class 530-8. Nothing really eventful happened, but I was really nervous because I wanted to find a place to sleep, but didnt know where to go and didnt really want to walk all the way back to past Georgetown. While walking through Foggy Bottom it started to downpour. SO I ducked into a classroom building at GW, with a freshman orientation group. Listened for about a half hour to their inane get to know each other games, where they were from, etc. and drank some Jack in plain view of them.

Then I wondered if I could get upstairs to the classrooms, which I could. Picked out a dark classroom on the second floor, and thought I was golden. Even had a view of a sorority house where lots of girls were plainly visible watching TV, getting ready for bed, etc. Not gonna lie to you, left a nice present on the desk while enjoying my surroundings before bed, if you know what I mean. Then curled up on the floor for what I thought was a comfortable sleep....

Not to be. Janitor kicked me out an hour later. Then a night of complete suckiness ensued, where I slowly made my way sleeping on various park benches from the kennedy center to near the white house, shivering cold and damp because although it wasn't raining, everything was wet from earlier, and it was actually fairly cold (low 60's, and I was in shorts with a thin blanket). I found it curious that although many cops of various sorts saw me sleeping on benches, and presumably saw that I wasn't your average looking homeless guy, they never bothered me.

Tuesday: Eventually went to the mall around 6am to sleep, slept pretty well 7-10, but it was still wet and cold early, and it got too hot quick. Just crappy day, and spent a bunch of my meager money on a potbelly sub, so figured I better do some begging to replenish my money.

So I made a sign and went to Dupont before my class that said "temporarily homeless and not all that bright: please help." Made like 5 bucks, and got some change from my classmates when it came time for class. Seeing their reactions as they slowly figured out I was really doing this and not joking was priceless--and the look on my teachers' face when he found out what I was doing--priceless. Plus I would always get to class first, and the first student there would sit as far away as possible until there were no more seats left. But the late students would have no choice but to breathe in my pungent smell of bugspray and sunscreen and body odor. Ha-ha.

That night found a good place to sleep--right by memorial bridge on a concrete bench--no one walks over memorial bridge at night or stops in the traffic circle by the Lincoln there, so I felt pretty safe. Nice night.

Wednesday: Not much happened. Went to Dupont after class to eat dinner. A large african american older gentleman took an interest in me and wondered if I was camping. I told him no--he kept bothering me. After awhile I politely excused myself to go eat my dinner in a place a little away from Dupont. Then I walked all the way to the swingset past Georgetown to sleep. Good night, smoked a cigar, drank most of my Jack. Slept pretty well.

Thursday: Walked my ASS off. 6 in the morning uphill up Foxhall to American U. Over to Connecticut near the MD border. Then down Connecticut to the zoo. That was cool. Saw one of the pandas decimate a bamboo tree for breakfast, and as mentioned, a zookeeper had left some carrots and lettuce unguarded which was destined for the monkey cage. That was my unexpected breakfast.

I was really tired by 12 and slept in Dupont roughly 12-3 waiting for my class. After class decided to look for a new place to sleep because I really wanted to do as little walking as possible, by this time the week was taking its toll and the miles and miles of walking were starting to have an effect. So I found a place to sleep at the Office of Personnel Management in Foggy Bottom on a bench.

That night around 1200 one of the funnier things of the week happened. Some drunk college students charged through the bushes without seeing me en route to drunken urination on the building, woke me and absolutely scared the piss out of me. I grabbed my pepper spray and sat up and scared one of them, leveling it about a foot from his face. Didn't shoot thankfully, as I'm sure I would have become persona non grata with the cops almost immediately I'm sure, but as one of their buddies still was urinating and the rest back in their car, one yelled "Hey, derelik my balls," at me, a quote from zoolander. I laughed (it was hilarious in the quiet city), but told the guy still urinating that they probably should have waited till he was in the car to yell stuff. He agreed. Hilarious, but maybe one of those things where you had to have been there.

Friday was the 4th. The rain made that night hard as well. The fireworks were great, and they occurred during a lull in the rain--I made it onto the mall for that. But spent a good time before and after the event taking shelter under building overhangs. Got kicked out of many, as there were extra security guards around for the 4th. Had no idea where to sleep, but eventually slept at my memorial bridge hangout roughly 1230-430, until it started raining again. At that point I decided to just walk up to my classroom at Johns Hopkins and sleep outside under its overhang.

Funny part about that is I was there for all of 15 minutes asleep when I was woken up, BY THE SAME LARGE GENTLEMAN I INTERACTED WITH ON WEDNESDAY. He was on his bike and asked me if I was okay at first, but then quickly evolved into him asking if I wanted to come to his place. He even was so kind as to get into some details of what would conceivably go on at his place.

Needless to say I politely declined. I would give anything to have seen my face when I saw him peering over my blanket when I woke up. Wow, just wow. Not sure if I accurately captured the humor/horror of this situation fully--but it was quite a moment.

In any case, after he went off on his way, I decided to actually sleep under the building. I burrowed myself in like a giant mole.

That's pretty much the jist, but I could talk for hours about it. Other highlights included my semi-naked bath in a sprinkler outside a building one day. I thought I could sneak into a hotel pool, but one of the things I learned (there were many) is that it is very difficult to do that in DC. In fact some of the hotels I couldnt even operate the elevator without a room key. So I gave up and used a sprinkler. A personal thrill for me is by accident walking into a kenner league basketball summer league game in Georgetown when I didnt know there was one. Air conditioning. Free basketball. Money.

The other main question was, how did I interact with other homeless people. Pretty well is the short of it, although we didn't interact that much. I was amazed at their talent for being unseen (one of my mistakes was being to visible). Several times I'd be in a park or something late at night, and I wouldn't notice a guy until I saw him stand up or heard the flow of his urine stream. As far as my sign and my begging, I was pretty careful not to intrude on anyone's begging corner.

Finally, I want to thank C and Tarvis and wives, and Steve for aid provided and helping to document all this. I also want to thank my new special friend Holly who I met Saturday night--apparently I didn't look all THAT bad by the end of the week.

Thanks for everything--look forward to talking about the week more when I see everybody some more in person....for now I guess I better get back to work.

I mean, when you take leave to go homeless and then spend most of the morning writing about it on your company's dime---

Oh well, f### them.

oh and stay tuned, there's supposed to be a story about J on the news tonight. I'll post video if I can.
The final update from C-

For those of you who were not able to make it to Capitol Lounge on Saturday night, I wanted to provide a brief recap and let you know that J did indeed make it through the week.

Since the last update there were a few interesting stories. Here is a brief recap.

v Thursday night, while sleeping in front of the Theodore Roosevelt Federal Building, J was startled when three young adults came running through the hedges looking for a quiet place to relieve themselves. He defended his bench by pulling out his pepper spray but never had a need to fire it at anyone. One of the intruders did make a "Zoolander" reference to J telling him to "Derelick my b@lls."

v Friday J set up his pillow and blanket just outside the security fence of the mall, allowing him to listen to some music and see all of the people. His highlight of the week came when he met up with his friends who brought him an order of TGI Friday's chicken wings. He did have to fend off other homeless people while eating his wings in the park, but it was a small price to pay for a warm meal.

v Storms, sprinklers and security guards kept J moving around pretty much all of Friday night.

v Saturday was largely spent taking a victory lap past all of the places he slept throughout the week. As an added bonus, college basketball summer league games started Saturday at Georgetown University so J was able to catch a game and check out some of the incoming George Mason recruits. Yes, summer league games have free admission.

v Finally, Saturday night J arrived to Capitol Lounge around 10:30 wearing his cleanest white shirt and his signature Pikachu backpack. A hamburger, a cold beer and about 40 friends greeted him as he made his way in to the bar. His week even featured a surprise ending that not even a Hollywood script writer could have come up with. I'll, however, leave it a mystery except for those who made it out to greet him and witness it first hand.

Thanks to everyone who followed along this week and especially to all of you who made it out Saturday night. I'm not sure we'll ever top this bet yet something tells me we'll someday give it a try.

So there, you have it, our epic tale comes to a close. And yes, the surprise ending is so insane that if I wrote about it, you would instantly think that this whole story is bullshit so I'm just going to leave it a mystery as well.

Here is J's update from this afternoon...

"Had to hightail it out of Dupont after class last night.  Some gay guy wanted to know if I was on a camping trip--I told him there was no way I'm pitching a tent here.  Anyway, stying clear of Dupont from now on at night.  Way too gay, and my homeless getup and A Pokemon backback I think makes them think I am desperate for money and half retarded; a combination no sex starved deviant can resist.

Some other guy accosted me when I neared my destination last night as well.  Wanted to know if I cooked.  Ugh.

My destination last night was my drop point Sunday--hope school in NE arpound 40th and Q.  Slept on a swingset and smoked a cigar, pretty good night.  Warm until 4 or so when I woke up cold.  Left around 515, walked my ASS off.  Uphill Foxhall to American.  American to UDC/Van Ness.  Then I went to zoo.  Saw pandas.  Saw all sorts of curious animals.  Ate some lettuce/carrots outside the monkey cage.  Hope they dont pput special monkey crap on it, but i FEEL fine.

Slept in Dupont which is much less gay 11am-3pm.  Money.

Things are okay but I want to sleep inside tonight.  Putting the huge hit on this 18 year old minkie in my class to hang out tonight at her place in Foggy Bottom.  But doubt I will have any success because I am starting to smell bad./weird combo of grime/sunscrren and bugspray."
a quick blurb from C just came down the wire, he visited J last night.

No email from J yet today, but I did talk to him and he is alive. I spoiled him with a sandwich and some additions to his liquor supply last night and he seemed to be doing well. All he told me today was that it was an interesting night that he will write about later. He has spent $12 of his original $20, but made $5.25, so he still has about $13 left.

The official report of what was inside his Pokemon backpack :

A liter of Jack Daniels
A change of underwear
A spare t-shirt
A spare pair of socks
Several power bars and 100 calorie packs
Two Arabic text books
One word search book
$20 cash (agreed to amount going in to bet)
Health insurance card
ID
A water bottle
A prepaid cell phone w/charger (C got him 100 minutes for the week for
correspondence between C and J)
Contact lenses and solution
Bug spray
Sun tan lotion
A marker and a pen
A disposable camera
A Lighter (thought he left his cigars in C's car)
J also had a sofa pillow and a small blanket with him.

J just sent the following email update:

"I thought I had it made last night as I escaped the rain by darting in with a GW freshman orientation group into a building of classrooms.  I staked out aq classroom on the 2nd floor, closed the doors, and prepared to stay the night, with a nice view of a sorority house across the way.

But around 1130 a janitor found me and kicked me out, so I had to go out for a long night.  Its sucks when things are still wet, my blanket gets damp and then I satrt to get cold.  I spent half the night shivering on a bench in front of the kennedy center, and then half on a bench on the ellipse.

I really couldnt sleep, but when dawn came around it finally started to gradually warm up--and I slept on the mall from about 8am-100pm.  I guess by default I'm going to stay up most nights and sleep during the day now--I've still got a good amount of jAck Daniels.

My powerbar rations and $ is getting low, I will have to beg again soon.  I couldnt resist getting a POTBELLY SUB TODAY WHEN I WOKE UP.  My sign is : temporarily homeless--and not all that bright--please help."

C is going to visit him tonight and bring him a care package. Talk about winning gracefully. I'd bring his ass a big 40 oz of malt liquor and that's about it.
Here's an update I got from C this morning.

------------------------------------------
Good morning everyone,
First off, here is J's email he sent yesterday afternoon from his first
day. He admitted it was brief but he was apparently in a hurry. He's
promised better tonight.

==============

"Slept at the LAB school in NW--woke up at 530 because the birds were loud.
Walked like three miles to the mall, slept in between capitol and monument
till 1000.  Left my reading glasses on mall will go back tomorrow and look
for them.  Went to history natural museum.

Begged for 2.25 used that to buy two one dollar chicken sandwiches.

Thinking about sleeping somewhere near dupont tonight because im tired lazy
to walk back to NW.  Will spend 830 on drinking jack and finding place to
sleep.  It is hard to sleep in morning with loud birds."

===============

I spoke to J at about 10:30 last night and he was sitting in the back of
a freshman orientation session at George Washington University (it was
storming outside). He successfully then made it upstairs into an empty,
unlocked classroom where he planned to spend the night. The room apparently
even overlooked a sorority house across the street where J claimed to
have already seen a few girls in pajamas.

J definitely seems to be regretting only bringing two shirts, that are
white nonetheless, because his first one is already soiled with dirt and
grass stains. If you are going on a Where's Jollay trip at any point this
week to visit him, bringing a spare t-shirt might be even better than money

---------------------------------------------------------

so there you have it. If i can find out where he'll be on monday i'll try to go visit him. I'll continue to post updates here as they come in.

Homeless in DC

OK this is too good not to share. Two friends of mine made a bet. Let's call them C and J.

The bet to my knowledge was that the brewers would have a better 07 season record than the phillies. I think the brewers ended up dropping like 3 games at the end of the season and C took the bet. That means J, the loser has to pay up.

I received the following email this morning:

As per the terms of a wager last year with C, I will
be spending the week starting next Sunday June 29th and ending
Saturday night July 5th homeless in DC.

Terms are as follows:

C will take custody of my wallet, car keys, and cell
phone (he will check my messages); I am only allowed to bring 20
dollars, my ID, and a kinko's card to give email updates with. I am
not permitted to stay in Kinkos for more than 30 minutes.

I can bring virtually whatever I want with the above stipulations in
mind, in a Pokemon backpack. But I can only bring what I can carry or
fit in the backpack. The only items I have decided on for sure are an
extra t-shirt, a blanket, a marker, some pepper spray, and a flask of
liquor.

I cannot leave DC city limits--I may beg for additional money to
sustain me for the week.

There will be either a party at C's house or a function at a
bar to welcome me back to society at around 10-11pm Saturday.

Please contact C at ###@gmail.com for updates on my
projected daily whereabouts/condition and adventures!!! And for
location to the Saturday party!!!

Please spread this email to all relevant parties via any means.

Thank you,

J

Holy. Fucking. Shit Yes.

I'll be posting updates to this story as they come.

Road Rage

So, I almost got shot on the way to work this morning...

Where the on-ramp merges in with 66W, this crazy bitch swerves out of her lane (already on 66) and nearly right into the side of me. A total jackass move on her part, she's just trying to use the merge lane to cut 5 or 6 cars in front of her. I had to pull onto the shoulder to avoid her so I honked and then moved in front of her.

Usually each driver just moves on and there is no further incident. Usually.

I'm merging in front of the bus that is following the appropriate "alternating vehicles" method, and I can see that she's going to try to jump in front of the bus. I find it appropriate to simply move ahead slowly and let the bus decide if it wants to let her in the lane or not. The bus does not. The bus is big as shit and does not give a fuck. This enrages the Thug Crusader. She seriously looks like Snoop from The Wire, but huge. She pulls up next to me and screams

"DO YOU WANT ME TO FUCK YOU UP? DO YOU WANT ME TO FUCK YOU UP? I'M GONNA FUCK YOUR BITCH ASS UP WHITE BOY!"

So I yell back something about her being out of her mind, driving on the shoulder and she starts trying to open the glove box talking about "lemme get this piece". She was arguing with the passenger who thought my life was apparently worth sparing. <3 Anyway, I just turned away at this point and looked straight ahead as she continued to call me a white prick bitch and then drove up and cut in in front of me.

If you ride metro to work in the AM, you probably don't ever get to experience road rage first hand, so you can be thankful for that much at least. I just think it sucks that some people's lives are so shitty that they can wake up in the morning and threaten violence against someone all before 8:15 AM.

You folks got any DC/MD/VA road-rage stories? Post em in the comments.

Sometimes you dont know what's going to come off the top of your head until you force your own hand. I haven't had the inspiration or the motivation to write in quite sometime, and I think it's because I'm becoming complacent. I'm not being challenged at work, I am very happy with my relationship, and I don't have too many frustrations in life right now.

I've been focusing on supporting others and giving my guidance on things as I've become used to doing. I really do enjoy that part of my life though. I'm not saying that my experience gives me the appropriate knowledge to tell people what to do with their lives, but I somehow am able to effectively relate the knowledge that I do have in a way that is helpful to people who may not have examined their situations from all sides. I only participate in this way to stimulate people into finding the answers that they seek, not to get any answers that I'm giving them.

But that's not getting my fingers on the keys and logging entries in the blog. I've found other ways to contribute things I have to say via the internet, and that has definitely cut into what I would take the time to get out via scrummyweb. I feel that one of my biggest draws is my sense of humor, but what I'm not very good at is being funny all on my own. I usually need someone to play off of, a straight man if you will. Standing up and telling jokes doesn't seem to ever just work for me. It's kinda funny, I don't know if I could stand up on a stage in front of a crowd and keep them entertained. It's not because I don't think I can, but because I just don't want to. It's not quite the same way with posting on here, but doing it by myself just doesn't light my fire like it used to.

I'm not too worried about it though. I'm sure the time will come (probably sooner than later) that I'll have more than my fair share to say, and I'll be able to do so. Life is made up of phases, and this is just one of them. So until next time, I hope you enjoyed The National, and keep checking back if you can. lates.

2 years ago today

Two years ago today was an exciting time in my life. I had just bought my first place, in a city with a great night life which was really exciting to me. I was looking forward to going out a lot, and enjoying the single life. My roommate and I decided to throw a party to celebrate our housewarming. We invited a bunch of close friends and friends of friends. I had no idea I was about to meet the girl I would fall in love with.
me and my lady
She was the sister of a friend of ours and was only in town that weekend by chance since she goes to school about 2 hours from where I live. When she arrived, I invited her and her friends inside and started to make drinks for everybody. I was excited to be behind the bar and get the party started, but I noticed her immediately. She had this smile that lit up the room and I knew I wanted to get to know her. We mingled a little and enjoyed the party, and before too long I called her out onto the balcony. We talked about work and school and our hobbies and interests, and I knew immediately that she was exactly the type of girl I would be interested in. We exchanged phone numbers and emails, and kept in touch for the next month or so until she would finish that semester and move back to NoVA for the summer. Even though we hadn't even been on our first date, we would talk at length a couple times a week and I was very excited for her to return. When she came back to the area I invited her up to my house for dinner and I tried my best to impress her in the best way I knew how, by cooking for her.

At the time, I didn't know that she was going to be such a big part of my life, I was just happy to get to go on one date with her. But we had such a good time, and I felt an instant connection that I knew I had to be around her even more. And that's how I still feel today. I just need to have her around me all the time. I've never felt like I had to work to make this happen, it's all just come together so naturally and felt so right. I really couldn't be happier.

So I'll celebrate today that she's still in my life and what we have is so incredible to me. Thank you so much for everything baby.
April Fools.

Whatsup peoples, time for some random info about me. I been playing the hell out of some Super Smash Brothers Brawl, what a deep game. Also I saw the Mountain Goats in concert about a week or so ago, it was a great show. We got a grill now at my condo, so I'm loving being able to cook large amounts of food out on the balcony. Other than that I'm still going strong doing what I do, hanging out and enjoying life. Oh, and in one week I'm going to see Saul Williams at 930. Currently noone is coming along, so if you read this and wanna get blown away by a great show then hit me up. And props to me for finally getting my taxes done. wooord!

As for Goodbye Horses, start playing it aloud in your office and see if anyone recognizes where it's from... WIN!

American Idle

I am being kept prisoner against my will. My geeyeph has commandeered the remote control and is forcing me to watch American Idol with her. Isn't it bad enough that Pop Music is in control of 90% of what we  hear on the radio, but now it dominates what we see on TV as well. It really bothers me that this show is on 3 damn nights a week and that all the other networks refuse to line up any decent shows against it because they know they'll be blown out. If it were just me here, i'd be watching stuff I had DVR'd or some random crap on the cable stations. So since I am stuck here watching this, I thought I'd hook you up with some new hotness on the indie rock tip. This is Kate Nash, and she's a spunky littuhl brit wif a haht of gowld. Cheers mates!

These are two very different songs that I want you to know about. I heard them both today and definitely knew I wanted another listen. On the drive in this morning I was listening to my usual Indie-Rock day-starting music. Then the Apples in Stereo announced they wanted me to feel it. I was singing along by the 2nd verse. I've never been known to argue when someone wants me to kick up the volume either.

The 2nd track is originally by an English band called Massive Attack, a trip-hop group that has a huge cult following. The song is actually the themesong to one of my favorite shows - House.  This guy singing it, his name is Newton Faulker. What a great set of pipes this guy's got. Perfect for the pace and tone of the song. This song gives me chills whenever I listen to it. Such a great groove. I heard this in the gym today and then later heard the station it was played on get announced. On Sirius, which I have in my car, whenever I wanna figure out a song that was playing that I don't remember the name of, I just go check out their awesome Dog-Star service. It's a really great schedule that lets you have a fully functional search of programs and artist/titles that have been on air. XM is what they have on DirectTV and play at my gym, and their schedule is not as good. They only have a schedule of their DJs and shows on their website. I had to track down a fansite of the particular channel they were playing in order to get 1 day of archived records of artists/tracks they'd played. In short, if I'd waited until tomorrow to try to find out who was singing "Teardrops", I wouldn't have gotten it. I forgot that it was called teardrops, all I recognized was the tune so I just had to go on the time and channel that I knew it was played at.

So there you go, Sirius is better than XM and these songs are hella good. Much like my weekend will be. Tonight I've got a happy hour w/ the coworker crew, then chillin during the day tomorrow. Saturday night Mimms should be in the zone, and we'll be chilling with some Bad News boys out in the city. You know how we do.

The mimms arrived in town on friday evening and we were stoked to celebrate our 2nd Valentines Day together. We exchanged gifts, went to a nice dinner up the street at 3, then came home and popped bottles and watched Feivel. Saturday was time to make a special breakfast treat, chocolate covered bacon. The subtle smoky taste of bacon bathed in sweet delicious chocolate, this is a taste combination not for the weak at heart.

The afternoon took us back to my alma mater for homecoming, and that means one thing to me and my friends. Tailgating. 8000 watts of sound and all the frosty cold beers you could want were in supply, so we kicked off the block party right. I got to see all my people and they got to see me in my prime. Then as per usual when I drink for 5 hours in a row, I like to sit down and relax and take a little nap. Except take a nap in this case means sleep through the entire game. When I did wake up to find my way to the restroom, I didn't have the best luck at finding my way back. I'd just walk up the stairs to some random section, not see anyone I knew, then find a chair sit down and fall back asleep. All the while mimms just hung out with my friends and laughed at my sleepy ass until it was time to take drunky home.

At the end of the game, we ended up losing at the final second which was pretty devastating to everyone's good time. Way to ruin a sold out crowd right? Well if that didn't ruin it, setting off the fireworks display just added insult to injury. To end off the weekend we headed over to jonny and kev's place to kick it for a bit before mimms had to go back to school. She'll be back in 2 weeks for spring break, but so it goes, I have to wait for my lovin. It's definitely worth the wait though. After she hit the road back to school, us boys took it to the woods for some night frisbee. Running around like hooligans wore us out after a while, so we trudged back to the house for a few minutes of rowdy indoor frisbee. Thats right Mom, a little ruckus never hurt nobody, and we didn't even break any furniture.

So today I'm just holding it down at the homestead on my day off. Watching my girl Paula Deen on the tube, and bloggin it up before I start to clean up this joint. I'll also be getting caught up on the best show on TV, The Wire, in a little bit so don't be callin me. Then tomorrow it's a one day work week at the office since I'll be at project management training the rest of the week. Ya heard? Gotta advance the career son.

Hope you enjoyed the Vampire Weekend, the track is called Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa.

Happy Valentines Day

And a big <3 to my lady, the m-i-double-Ms, she's pretty damn amazing. Yes it's true.

It looks like it's gonna rain.

This is from a long time ago, but I wanted to put it here so it will be immortalized.

I was catching up with my boy Adam earlier today and he dropped some knowledge on me as he occasionally likes to do.

First up, on the chill tip, we have the Helio Sequence. I'm giving them the first listen as I write this, and the kid is definitely onto something. This is a good time for my ears. To start us off, we have Everyone Knows Everyone. This is definitely a feel good sound going on in this tune. I'm digging the bleeps and blips, a little electronica feel, and hold on, is that a harmonica? Nice! The second track I put in, Blood Bleeds is probably my favorite so far. Very nice grooves with a little bit of up-tempo to it. This is what it would sound like if it was possible to sound good underwater. I want this song to be in the background of an ocean exploration show. Keep Your Eyes Ahead rounds out this plug with a more traditional guitar driven sound. I dig the use of reverb, because let's face it, rock music sounds better in tunnels and bathrooms. This band is so refreshing because I don't recall any other band right away that they sound like. Gonna have to get at this album for sure.

On the hip hop tip, we get Aesop Rock w/ D.E.L. off the Think Differently Music album: Wu Tang Meets the Indie Culture.

This track give us Ace doing it up w/ one of my other favorite rappers, and he starts us off right.
In true form he brings the lyrical mastery over a nice simple beat setup, and tosses the mic to Del to add the style element to push it even higher. What I like so much about the Wu's production on this track many of the others is that it doesn't overdo it and drown out the verse or the message. It lets the artists effectively get their points across without having to compete for the spotlight, while at the same time keeping our fuckin heads nodding. Preservation is the title of this one and I think it refers to them representing the underground and they dont need to get rich by it. They just wanna stay true to their roots and be able to keep makin their music.

This is just an example of one track off the album, which includes contributions by RZA, GZA, U-God, MF Doom, Ras Kass, Aesop Rock, Del tha Funky Homosapien, Sean Price, J-Live, Tragedy Khadafi, C-Rayz Walz, Planet Asia, RA the Rugged Man, Littles, Cannibal Ox, and even filmmaker Jim Jarmusch.

One more plug goes out to Scientifik, with some crucial old school sound. I'm just learning of him and apparently he passed away back in the mid nineties, truly a talent lost like so many others in hip hop.

Damn right.

Went to see the new Paul Thomas Anderson last night w/ the roommate. Very very impressive movie. Of course, if you see Daniel Day Lewis's name anywhere near a film you know its going to be top tier.

This is the kind of actor that can have an entire movie revolve around his character and bring a strong enough performance to pull it off. Day-Lewis is known for never coming out of character throughout the entire shooting schedule of his films, and also for being very selective. He's only been in 4 films over the past 10 years, and it's not because he's not in demand. It's the main reason he is in demand.

And not to mention this next scene, one of the coolest in history, from Last of the Mohicans. This isn't just focused on the acting, but just the awesome feeling you get when you watch these movies. If you can with this clip without getting goosebumps you deserve to have your ass kicked.

I've actually walked where they walk in this scene, shot at Chimney Rock NC. Very cool spot.
